Position: Investor Relations and Transactions Portfolio Manager
Location: UK or Nairobi (with travel expected ~30%)

Introduction:
Manufacturing Africa (MA) is a seven-year flagship FCDO-funded programme operating in Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania that seeks to increase investment into the manufacturing sector in Africa, leading to £1.9billion FDI and creating 99,000 jobs in production facilities and across supply chains.

The role:
The Investor Relations and Transactions Portfolio Manager will be a member of the central programme management unit (PMU), working closely with the Transaction Facilitation (TF) Leadership team.
The role will focus on (i) designing and delivering an investor relations strategy for the programme in agreement with FCDO private sector advisors based in country, with a view to accelerate financial close (ii) working closely with country deal teams to oversee and provide aftercare support on select deals (ii) support the TF leadership team with management of the regional deal portfolio and deal teams.
This is a portfolio level position which will report directly to the Transaction Principal and require significant interaction with the country level teams and FCDO advisors. Travel for investor meetings, team coordination and event attendance will be required c.30% of the time.

Key responsibilities

  1. Investor Relations
    • Update the investor list at HQ and country level to include DFIs, strategic, regional and impact investors/funds (including Gender Lens Investors) related to bundles of MA deals in specific geographies and/or subsectors and ticket size and clear this will FCDO central team and advisers
    • Design and implementation of an investor relations strategy for MA, and alignment with country teams and FCDO private sector advisors based in country on implementation of the strategy for each country
    • Ongoing dialogue and coordination of investor discussions with a view to improve MA visibility and originate buyside deals – includes regular calls and feedback, helping coordinate materials for investors, and pipeline sharing; this includes activities such as:
      • Design and dissemination of investor information materials, coordinating with the programme leadership and communications function
      • Attendance of events linked to the investor relations strategy and promotion of MA’s pipeline to investors.
      • Design and implementation of a roadshow strategy where necessary
    • Capture lessons learned from investor engagement to feed into programme delivery and wider FCDO (to be delivered as an insight session)
    • Coordination of deal dissemination through deal platforms such as AFSIC
    • Liaising with FCDO country teams to ensure alignment on regional and/or country specific investor relations strategy
  2. Events and Communications
    • Organisation of investor events and roadshows, eg. in-country investor events, in collaboration with country teams, and international roadshow management
    • Developing and coordinating materials for the MA website for investors including managing investor database
    • Representation of MA at strategic level to external stakeholders including at key events
    • Liaising with MA comms lead on selection of events and helping to shape comms plan
  3. Structured Aftercare Management
    • Agree with FCDO (HQ and advisers) list of aftercare companies, rationale for choice and approach (by sub-sector or value chain or cross country or all of the above), including to match updated investor pool/list with the goal to maximise investment closes
    • Provide strategic support and input to country teams on aftercare advisory e.g. advice on negotiation, Q&A with investors, term sheets, interpretation of investor feedback for a select set of deals
    • Undertaking pitch practise and advise to select companies with regards to investor perspectives and positioning including GESI and other impact considerations
  4. Portfolio Management
    • Strategic input to programme TF processes, approaches, and positioning to wider stakeholders, with a focus on feeding back lessons on investor engagement into the TF approach. This should involve engaging with regular TF meetings to ensure there is alignment across teams
    • Support Approval Committee (SAC) review for of deals, focusing on investor led transactions, or transactions that are heavily dependent on an investor
    • QA of deliverables focusing on IMs, financial models, capital structuring for select countries as needed
    • Input to M&E and learning work led by other team members
    • Regional deal origination and development

Person specification

Required:

  • At least 10 years’ experience in corporate finance, working on end-to-end transactions and with understanding of international best practice
  • Explicit relevant Experience of closing deals in Africa, with experience working across multiple markets, debt and equity
  • Experience engaging (and active networks) with wide range of investors, including DFIs, PE and corporate investors in Africa.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to take initiative and responsibility for initiatives end to end
  • Experience working on multi-cultural and international teams, with experience of managing and developing more junior team members
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to tailor communication to different audiences and influence stakeholders effectively, particularly in the investment community
  • Strategic thinker with philosophy of continuous improvement

Preferrable:

  • Understanding of development partner programming in the investment space, with understanding of FCDO programmes being highly desirable
  • Experience working in consulting, including experience of delivering presentations and influencing stakeholders
  • Relevant regional experience across Africa, particularly in East and West Africa where MA operates
