This report assesses the environmental footprint and nature risks of expanding palm oil and cotton manufacturing supply chains in Tanzania to inform local producers, international investors, and policymakers. It highlights that replacing Tanzania’s 95% crude palm oil import reliance through unmanaged local agriculture could trigger a 300-fold increase in land conversion and a 95-fold surge in greenhouse gas emissions. To prevent this, the study uses the TNFD LEAP framework and geospatial mapping to identify 0.5 million hectares of low-water-risk, non-forested land capable of sustainably producing 2 million MT of crude palm oil annually.
